Background and current state of the project
CASY has acquired a 50,000-square-foot warehouse at 2001 N. Hunt Road in Terre Haute, Indiana (47803), which will be redeveloped into a two-phase, high-quality early childhood education center with a total licensed capacity of 288 children. Phase 1 includes property acquisition and renovation to serve 192 children, with an estimated investment of $7.5 million. Phase 2 will expand capacity by an additional 96 children at a projected cost of $2 million and is anticipated to be completed within 3–5 years. Current fundraising efforts are focused on the completion of Phase 1.
The new center will:
The new center will provide accessible, high-quality child care for families in our community. Families eligible for the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) voucher program can also enroll at the center.
Achieve Paths to QUALITY™ Level 4 national accreditation.
Pursue military certification to serve families connected to the nearby 181st Intelligence Wing.
Offer wraparound care to accommodate weekend drill schedules for military families.
Offer extended services that CASY currently provides – possibly play therapy, assistance with car seats, and additional family/parent support groups.
Operate Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with one fully staffed weekend per month to meet military family needs.
Strategically located within a 5–20 minute drive of Rose Hulman, Ivy Tech Community College, Indiana State University, downtown Terre Haute, Brazil, and major employment centers, the site is positioned to directly support workforce participation and regional economic growth across Vigo and Clay counties.
This initiative aligns with the regional strategic plan, Grow Up in West Central Indiana, developed by Ivy Tech Community College, Indiana State University, and the CASY Early Learning Initiatives program. The plan presents compelling quantitative and qualitative data demonstrating that limited access to child care remains a significant barrier to economic development, underscoring the urgent need for expanded, high-quality early learning opportunities in the region.
